Napa Valley, United States

The story of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is now legendary. Founded in 1970 in Napa Valley, the winery was thrust into the spotlight when a bottle of the 1973 Stag’s Leap Vineyard Cabernet won the now-famous 1976 Paris Tasting, besting some of France’s greatest wines. The historic tasting, which has become known as the "Judgment of Paris", fundamentally transformed how the world viewed the American wine trade.

More Info

For more than 30 years, Hawk Crest has produced approachable, fruit-forward wines of high quality and fine value. Winemaker Mark Smith puts some 10,000 miles on his vehicle during the growing season, searching for and selecting specific vineyards in some of California's most promising wine regions for the grapes that go into Hawk Crest wines. This Cabernet Sauvignon combines the best of Lake County's hillside vineyards in the Red Hills appellation, with the bright fruit grown in the Paso Robles appellation. The result is a wine that is varietally true, well-structured, food-friendly and a pleasure to drink.

"Is a second label from Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. We seldom have the opportunity to buy textbook California Cabernet Sauvignon that has already been aged to perfection. It overflows with ripe black cherry and cassis flavors, and hints of cedar, toast, sweet vanilla oak, sage, mint and eucalyptus and a spicy, earthy minerality."

"Cali Cab with eight years of age for this price? Usually unheard of, but here it is. Hawk Crest has a great pedigree: it’s made by Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, who shot to stardom when their 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over top Bordeaux wines at the momentous 1976 Judgment of Paris. The cabernet fruit comes primarily from cool, hilly sites in Lake County, just north of Napa. The small crop 2008 vintage was a nail-biter, but the wines are admired for their purity and elegance. Red and black fruit, subtle grilled bell pepper, cigar box and graphite complexity are the hallmarks of a nicely evolved, harmonious cabernet. Hawk Crest deserves a large-bowled glass, and a perfect roast of beef. It’s simple: do not miss out."
