The Cortonesi winery is a family-owned winery in Montalcino. Today, Tommaso, Marco and Giulio continue the winemaking work according to tradition, while employing modern technologies to the enhance the quality of their production. Cortonesi owns some of the most prized vineyards in the north and south-east of Montalcino. Since 1998 wines from La Manella and Il Poggiarelli have been vinified separately. Marco understood the importance of separating the grapes from these two different terroirs, to underline their characteristics and peculiarities of each, and to fully show the full potential of the territory of Montalcino.

"...hello to a '23 that Tommaso Cortonesi says is "very close to the Rosso di Montalcino style that I want for my winery." Tommaso has been working and honing his concept of Rosso for more than a decade and this first look at its next iteration seems somewhat of an aggressive one. That is the idea and Cortonesi admits how others who faced major 2023 challenges were jealous of the quality and quantity of La Mannella's harvest. Palate intensity is off the charts, there is a spicy element happening and structure is tops for Rosso. There are Brunello makers who would kill for this combination of substance and style." - Michael Godel

"Cortonesi makes a very satisfying Rosso that drinks and performs above its weight class. The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino La Mannella (with 20,000 bottles released) shows a dark garnet color with medium-lean concentration. There is plenty of dark cherry and fresh fruit at its core. That center is framed by earthy notes of iris root and chestnut husk. All of those flavors conclude with pretty freshness."

"Attractive aromas of ripe cherries, dried orange peel, dried flowers and walnuts. Medium-bodied, structured and polished with fine tannins and juicy acidity. Balanced and even with a lengthy, mineral finish. Drink or hold."

"...Top edging fruit and edgy accents elevate the aromatics so that the terroir is allowed to shine on through. Behold this prime work ethic, use of wood and also time in all the right ways. Place is at the fore. Grande. Drink 2023-2028."

"The aromas are very floral, with black-cherry undertones. Medium body, firm tannins and a chewy finish. Structured for a Rosso. Drink or hold."
2019 -
"The Cortonesi 2019 Rosso di Montalcino La Mannella is vibrant and fresh, with plenty of tart cherry, red berry and cranberry to keep the palate refreshed. The wine is clean and streamlined but not thin or short by any means. That special 2019 vintage richness and concentration is played forward to good effect in this well-priced bottle. I look forward to tasting the upcoming Brunellos from this vintage."

"...Seemingly dark in hue but bright and tart in such an accentuated way. Can't really shake the idea of the quality inherent in this specific scope of concentration. A liqueur of sangiovese, moving towards the finish swiftly and courteously across the palate. Drink 2022-2026."
2018 -
"Good full red. Very clean and precise aromas and flavors of ripe red fruit and herbs, complicated by flinty nuances. Closes long and zesty. Offers lovely acid-fruit presence and an easy to like, early appeal."
2018 -
"Fruit from the youngest vines (planted in 2011) at the La Mannella site make this unique wine. Not many producers are in a position to make a single-vineyard Rosso, but we are slowly seeing more of them come to market. The Cortonesi 2018 Rosso di Montalcino La Mannella is redolent of red berry fruit, almond and plum. The wine does offer a rather prominent sense of structure, and this is one of the characteristics of the La Mannella site. Some 15,000 bottles were made, and this wine hit the market in November 2019."
