The Cortonesi winery is a family-owned winery in Montalcino. Today, Tommaso, Marco and Giulio continue the winemaking work according to tradition, while employing modern technologies to the enhance the quality of their production. Cortonesi owns some of the most prized vineyards in the north and south-east of Montalcino. Since 1998 wines from La Manella and Il Poggiarelli have been vinified separately. Marco understood the importance of separating the grapes from these two different terroirs, to underline their characteristics and peculiarities of each, and to fully show the full potential of the territory of Montalcino.

Dark ruby with garnet hues.
Aromas of dark fruits, chocolate and cinnamon.
Juicy dark fruits, with earthy notes and a hint of exotic spice. Medium bodied with chewy tannins and a flavourful finish.
This broad-based wine pairs perfectly with charred meat, game and mushroom-based dishes. It would also go beautifully with dessert such as blueberry tarts or dark chocolate with fruit.
A wine with strong structure, grown in soil that is rocky and rich in marl. Brunello “Poggiarelli” rests in French oak tonneaux for about 24 months, a stretch of time considered sufficient to obtain the optimal balance between the exaltation of its freshness and ageing. The wine was then aged in the bottle for 6 months. The expression of an innovation of the territory and a conceptual evolution.
2021 -
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli entices with savory crushed blackberries complemented by citrus zest, ground cloves and dried roses. It is round and soft with saline mineral tones underscoring ripe wild berry fruits. Fine-grained tannins accumulate toward the close. Nuances of licorice mix with violet inner florals as the 2021 tapers off with lovely length and a pleasant chewiness." - Eric Guido
2020 -
"A youthful saturated red color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggiarelli is lush with notes of black plum, currant, lavender, sweet herbs, black olive, and cedar. Full-bodied, with ripe tannins and broad shoulders, but without weight, this is a solid wine with very nice balance to drink over the next 15 years." - Audrey Frick
2020 -
"Open and expressive, displaying bright cherry, strawberry, rose hip and flint flavors, this red is elegant and tensile. There are plenty of resonant tannins, yet this seems to be in the correct proportions. Fine length." - Bruce Sanderson
2020 -
"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli entices with a bouquet that blends scents of crushed rocks, dusty rose, blood orange and black cherries. This is soothingly round and supple, offset by a core of mineral-infused red berry fruits, sour citrus and brisk acidity. It tapers off tart and long, with a coating of fine tannins and salted licorice, yet the mouth waters for more." - Eric Guido
2019 -
"Plenty of plum and cherry character here with aromas of flowers and cherry blossom that follow through to a medium body, very fine tannins and a flavorful finish. Plenty of clean fruit at the end. Give it time to develop in the bottle. Better after 2025."
2019 -
"The Poggiarelli vineyard is in a secluded part of Montalcino. At 450 metres to the east of the town, it is tightly nestled into the hill and surrounded by holm oak forest. To curb its fierce tannin profile, winemaker Tommaso Cortonesi introduced 15 to 20% whole bunches in 2019. This imparts a spicy evergreen twist to the iron and dark wet earth aromas. Broad shouldered and sturdy, the palate broods with hints of blackcurrant offset by stony minerals. Tannins are expansive and grainy yet deftly woven into the whole. Juiciness appears toward the backend giving buoyancy. Spice notes reverberate on the finish, taking on shades of cinnamon."
2019 -
"The medium red 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggiarelli is savory with smoky incense as well as notes of preserved cranberries, dried orange peel, tomato leaf, and leather. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a good deal of structure while remaining refined and balanced, with ripe tannins and even acidity. It has a long, lovely finish and offers a lot to look forward to as it matures. Drink 2026-2040."
2019 -
"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli bursts from the glass with an intense blend of medicinal cherries, cedar shavings and cloves. Silky smooth, this washes across the palate with ease, ushering in ripe wild berry fruits as slowly mounting tannins add tension toward the close. This finishes structured and long, leaving suggestions of blackberry preserves and crunchy mineral tones to slowly fade."
2018 -
"At 1,400 feet in elevation on the southeastern side of Montalcino, Poggiarelli is a Grand Cru site (monopole) with sandy, rocky limestone soils and great sun exposure. The aromas of this wine, which spent two years in 500-liter French casks, are deep and dark, including cardmom, white pepper, and soy sauce. Black plum saturates the palate, layered with fig, black cherry, and graphite. The relative warmth of Poggiarelli shows in the ripe profile of the wine, which possesses no tannic agression but does have a savory, earthy, umami nature. Says Tommaso, "We know that 2018 was an underrated vintage, but this wine has incredible aging potential."
2018 -
"Wonderfully perfumed with aromas of lavender, rosehip, blueberries, strawberries, sliced orange, chocolate and nutmeg. It’s full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Creamy and gorgeously textural. Long. Lots to like. Better after 2024."
2018 -
"The Cortonesi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli (with 8,000 bottles made) maintains a good sense of freshness and primary fruit. This fact is not to be underestimated, especially in this challenging vintage that started off cool and ended very hot. Poggiarelli opens to a darkly saturated appearance with tart cassis, wild cherry, blue flower and grilled rosemary. The wine is structured and firm with a subdued and elegant finish. You'll like the way this Brunello feels and tastes."
2018 -
"Poggiarelli hails from Cortonesi’s holdings in Montalcino’s southeast. Reaching 450 metres above sea level, the warm, well-drained site fared extremely well in 2018. In fact, this is the best vintage I have tried. Lively and intriguingly scented, it exhibits a classy balance of dark cherry, violets, stone and oak spice. The amply packed palate is neatly encased by sophisticated wood and invigoratingly firm tannins. One of the year’s more powerfully structured wines, it's still somewhat austere yet poised to age gracefully."
2018 -
"The 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Poggiarelli takes on more mineral-tinged aromatics, with graphite, black cherry, and smoky earth. It is generous and full on the palate, with blackberry, meaty richness without weight, and velvety tannins. A persistent mineral drive coaxes throughout and propels the wine forward. Drink 2024-2034."
2018 -
"Savory herbs come together with dusty black cherry and hints of clove as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli unfolds in the glass. It’s silky upon entry with a balanced inner sweetness that contrasts its tart wild berry fruits. The 2018 finishes with admirable length and concentration, as fine tannins add youthful poise, and hints of sour citrus and inner florals fade."
2017 -
"This is a second single-vineyard wine made by Cortonesi. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli reveals dense and rich fiber that wraps thickly but smoothly over the palate. This wine is woven tightly with soft layers of black fruit, plum, spice, tar and licorice. It is important to underline the difference between the more compact and vertical La Mannella against this more generous and broad-based wine, especially when making food-pairing decisions. This is your proverbial charred-meat wine."
2017 -
"Juicy red with blood-orange, hazelnut, chocolate and spice character. Sour cherry, too. It’s medium-bodied and in-check with dusty tannins and a flavorful finish. Fine and focused. Drink or hold."
2017 -
"With holdings in two distinct areas of Montalcino, Cortonesi bottles each separately embracing the diversity of sites. Located in the southeast, Poggiarelli’s high altitude helped mitigate the extreme heat of 2017. Nevertheless, it is a more hearty and chewy expression compared to the Mannella bottling. Earthy, irony and baked clay aromas lead, with mint and chocolate nuances joining in on the palate. The tannins are thick and fairly wood driven. While this needs a bit of time to come together, it will give most of its pleasure in the near to mid-term."
2017 -
"An elegant style, boasting strawberry, cherry, floral, mineral and herb aromas and flavors. Firms up, with the compact tannins providing grip on the finish, yet this red is also long. Best from 2025 through 2040. Tasted twice, with consistent notes."
2017 -
"Aromas of underbrush, menthol and tobacco along with a whiff of dark spice form the subtle nose. The robust palate features dried cherry, steeped prune, coffee and licorice framed in grainy tannins that leave an extremely drying finish. Despite the assertive tannins, drink sooner rather than later to capture the remaining fruit richness."
2017 -
"The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli pulls you close with dark florals and earth tones that give way to black cherry and exotic sweet spices. This is round and pliant with ripe black fruits and minerals, as hints of tobacco form toward the close..."
2016 -
"While Cortonesi's main holdings are in the north of Montalcino, the estate’s Poggiarelli site is located in the southeast. It sits between 420 to 450 metres on Galestro, or marl-rich rocky soil. Faint aromas of cinnamon and clove resound on the palate where they are joined by brambly black currants and smoky flint nuances. This is still tight, with dry wood tannins rigidly in place but underneath fruit purity and zestiness shine through."
